When I sit down with a fresh sheet of heavy-grain paper, the world around me starts to fade into the background. I find a strange sort of peace in the rhythmic, scratchy soundtrack of graphite meeting the page. My hands are usually stained with a mix of silver-grey dust and deep, velvet charcoal, which I use to map out the stories hidden in a person's features. I don’t just want to capture a likeness; I want to pin down that one fleeting, honest expression that makes a soul recognizable. By stripping away the distraction of color, I’m able to focus entirely on the dance between harsh shadows and delicate highlights. For me, every portrait is a silent conversation that ends only when the final smudge of charcoal brings a gaze to life.
